CAPHIS at MLA'13 in Boston

Monday May 6 is CAPHIS Day at MLA’13 from morning ‘til night!
First, there are two meetings. The Business Meeting is scheduled for 7am-9am and the Board Meeting will be held from 4:30pm-6:30pm. Refreshments will be provided. Rooms have not been assigned as of yet but will be announced on the CAPHIS listserv in March.
There are four programs; CAPHIS is the lead for two programs and a collaborator in two others, as follows:
- Theme 7, Health Literacy: Linguistic and Cultural Diversity, is organized by CAPHIS and PH/HA as the lead sections, and is presented in partnership with three MLA sections: the Hospital Libraries Section; the Pharmacy and Drug Information Section, and the Relevant Issues Section. The program moderator is Claire B. Joseph, Director of the Medical Library at the South Nassau Communities Hospital (Oceanside, New York). The timeframe is 10:30am-12noon.

- ICML 2: Trustworthy and Authoritative Publicly Available Information is organized by the 2013 National Program Committee (NPC) and the 11th International Congress on Medical Librarianship (ICML) in partnership with CAPHIS and the Corporate Information Services Section. It is scheduled from 10:30am-12noon. The presentation titles are as follows: “Trustworthiness and Authoritativeness of YouTube Videos on Smokeless Tobacco”; “Twenty Years of The Cochrane Collaboration: a Legacy of Trustworthy and Authoritative Publicly Available Information and Plans for the Future”; “Information Connections: Providing Access, Linking Communities”, and “A Content Analysis of Health Information in Wikipedia: How Does It Compare to WebMD and CDC?”
- Theme 8, The Provision of Health Information and Health Care Services to an Aging Population with Chronic Health Conditions, is organized by CAPHIS in partnership with the Library Marketing SIG and the Outreach SIG. The moderator is Carol Ann Attwood, MLS, AHIP, MPH, RN, C. Carol Ann is the manager of the Patient and Health Information Library at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. The timeframe is 3:00pm to 4:30pm.

- Theme 5: Promoting Healthy Nutrition and Natural Remedies for Environmental Health and Wellness in Humans and Animals, is organized by the Chiropractic Librarians Section in partnership with CAPHIS, CMLS, and the CAM SIG. The program moderators are Mariana Lapidus and Janet Tapper. The timeframe is 3:00 to 4:30pm. Two distinguished presenters for this program are as follows: Catherine Ulbricht, Pharm.D. co-founder of the Natural Standard Research Collaboration, Senior Attending Pharmacist at Massachusetts General Hospital, and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Dietary Supplements, will speak on “An Integrative Approach to Health and Wellness” and David Wickes, DC, Dean of the College of Chiropractic, at the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, will discuss “Functional Medicine as an Emerging Paradigm in Healthcare.”
There are several exciting conference events that will be held on Monday May 6 and are likely of interest to many CAPHIS members. For the most part, they do not conflict with CAPHIS programming.
- Janet Doe Lecture, 9:00am to 10:00am. This year, the speaker is Joanne Gard Marshall, PhD, AHIP, FMLA, and alumni distinguished professor, School of Information and Library Science, University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill.
- Awards Ceremony and Luncheon, 12noon to 1:30pm. This is a ticketed event.
- Academy of Health Information Professionals Q & A Session, 1:30-2:30pm.
- Open Forums, 2:00-3:00pm.
